BET YOU DIDNT KNOW: Long before Lucille Ball became TVs biggest star in the 1950s, she was a movie actress. Her roles ranged from minor to the star - all before TV. What I bet you didnt know is this: One of her first credited screen roles in a film was a supporting one in the 1934 college football comedy short, The Three Little Pigskins. The stars were The Three Stooges. The film was an early one for The Three Stooges, too - only the fourth of the 190 shorts they would make for Columbia Pictures between 1934 and 1959. It was so early in their career, in fact, that they werent even known yet as The Three Stooges. They were billed as individuals - Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard (billed as Jerry Howard.) The movie was filmed in just five days - October 25-30, 1934 - and was released on December 8, 1934. That was 80 years ago yesterday. Ive never seen it, but would love to some day. Four comedy giants just starting their careers. The Stooges would stick with slapstick. Lucy would go on to write the book on more sophisticated physical humor. In later years, Lucy was not all that impressed with her time with the Three Stooges. Referencing their frequent spraying of seltzer bottles in the film, she once said, The only thing I learned from The Three Stooges was how to duck. And I still got wet. Lucille Ball in a Three Stooges movie. Yep. It really happened.
