BEYOND MIDWIFERY EDUCATION Around the world, 58 countries face significant maternal health care shortages. In the worst circumstances, as few as 2.3 doctors, nurses, and midwives are available to serve more than 1,000 people. As a result, approximately 350,000 women die while pregnant or giving birth every year—almost 1,000 a day. Of these women, 99 percent die in developing countries. There is no question that midwifery education programs around the world need to meet this demand and provide highly skilled health care workers to these resource-constrained communities. While myriad variables affect maternal and neonatal mortality — including education, nutrition, and socioeconomic status — timely access to skilled care is among the most impactful. Midwife International works to bridge the maternity healthcare gap by catalyzing a global workforce of maternal healthcare leaders. We partner with other established organizations to coordinate placement for our students at birth clinics in resource-constrained regions around the globe. Reflecting our commitment to high-quality midwifery education, students at each are guided through our service learning model, and our unique curriculum that combines hands-on skills training with academic study, leadership training, and culturally appropriate demand creation projects. Under one umbrella, our midwife training sites share resources on a global scale but remain country-specific, run by local midwives. We are committed to local leadership, renewable resources, and clinics that sustain themselves financially. At each of our country sites we provide instruction led by midwife preceptors who represent culturally specific approaches as well as international standards of midwifery care. Based on available infrastructure, digital media such as video and Internet technology will be used to facilitate ongoing exchange between students, maternal health experts, and midwives from around the world. No other midwifery program emphasizes shared resources and knowledge across international and cultural boundaries, fusing remote clinics as a conduit for innovation in maternal health interventions. “The Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) certification was in part developed to allow students to learn in a more non-traditional setting. Midwife International’s educational model is a perfect off-shoot from this concept. Being able to learn from experiences and supplement with book study and workshops has allowed me to connect and understand material and skills much faster than if I simply started off with didactic learning only. Intertwining community-building projects also helped me to develop my leadership skills, which are extremely important as a midwife, as we are constantly advocating; for women, for babies and for midwives.
