BH EVERYDAY - the General Daniel "Chappie" James and Generaal Hazel Johnson edition Robert Tanner Freeman became the first Black person to graduate from the Harvard Dental School on this date in 1867. Dr. George Washington Carver, scientist and discoverer of over 300 products from the peanut and sweet potato, began his remarkable career as a distinguished Agricultural Chemist at Tuskegee Institute on this date in 1896. Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr. was named as the first Black Four-Star General on this date in 1975. James also held the title Commander-in-Chief of the North American Air Defense Command. Ethel Waters, famed singer and dancer, died in Chatsworth, CA, on this date in 1977. Waters was popular during the "Harlem Renaissance" and sang "Down Home Music" and "Oh Daddy." She won best supporting actress for her role in Pinky (1949) and wrote an autobiography, His Eye Is on the Sparrow (1951). Hazel W. Johnson achieved the rank of Brigadier General (U.S. Army) on this date in 1979, becoming the first Black woman General in U.S. history.
