BIG ISSUE IN THE NORTH TODAYS/THIS WEEKS ISSUE LATEST ISSUE OUT ON 14 APRIL. £2 FEATURE ON MARTIN HANNETT BITN 1025_Page_01It’s our annual music special this week, with an emphasis on the region’s proud musical history. There’s a look back at the folk club boom of the sixties and seventies that gave illustrious names like John Martyn, Billy Connolly and Barbara Dickson their break. There were 72 folk clubs in the Liverpool area alone at one point, while Manchester, Sheffield and Hull were also in on the acts. Martin Hannett was the genius who transformed the sound of Joy Division from straightforward post-punk into something altogether more majestic, intriguing and profound. But although the record producer, who died in 1991, was closely associated with the legendary Factory Records, there was a lot more to him than that, as a new book and DVD reveal. We don’t just look backwards though. We preview all the biggest acts playing live in the next few weeks. From Katy Perry to Courtney Love, the Fall to Dolly Parton, there’s sure to be something for you. Elsewhere, we examine how Aung San Suu Kyi is coming to terms with the nitty-gritty of Burmese politics after those long years under house arrest, talk to the young care leavers from North Yorkshire who’ve made an inspiring song and video about their experiences good and bad, and report on attempts to unionise the workforce at fashion retailer ASOS’s plant near Barnsley. The recruitment campaign was inspired by our report in January about the miserable conditions workers there are forced to endure. - See more at: bigissueinthenorth/latest-issue-out-on-24th-may-2#sthash.ED7vCOjZ.dpuf
