BILL WITHERS A Soul giant who has written and sung some of the finest, most unpretentiously uplifting songs, including Lean on Me, Aint No Sunshine, Use Me, Just the Two of Us, Lovely Day, and Grandmas Hands. He is the youngest of thirteen children from small coal-mining town in West Virginia. When he was 13 his father died leaving the family destitute. Withers enlisted with the United States Navy at 18, served for 9 years, then worked as an assembler for several different companies, including Douglas Aircraft Corporation, while recording demo tapes with his own money. Even after Aint No Sunshine become a hit in 1972, he refused to give up his day job, because he felt he was a novice who would probably end up as a one hit wonder. Thankfully this humble maestro proved to be wrong. Bill won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1972 with his debut and has never looked back.
