BILLY CONNOLLY’S wife has told how the comic’s battle with Parkinson’s disease caused his distinctive voice to begin to fail and led him to consider quitting the stand-up shows he loves. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Pamela Stephenson Connolly said the Glaswegian had to be persuaded to keep going after being diagnosed with the condition but that speech therapy had helped prepare him for a return to the stage. “I felt he needed to get over the sensation that he was an invalid and that was the end of his comedy career,” she said. “I wouldn’t have encouraged him if I hadn’t felt it was essential. He loves to be on the stage and it would be disastrous to be suddenly withdrawn from that.”
