BIRTHDAY GREETINGS going out today to a gentleman who is arguably one of our most important figures in jazz history -- pianist, bandleader and composer, McCOY TYNER! Born December 11, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, Tyner showed a love for music early, and his mother encouraged this, providing him with formal training. As a young teenager, he became a part of Phillys Jazz and R&B scene of the early 1950s. And at only seventeen years of age, McCoy Tyner embarked on an important rmusical relationship with Miles Davis sideman, saxophonist John Coltrane. Tyner joined Coltrane for the classic album My Favorite Things in 1960, and until 1965 remained at the core of one of the most seminal groups in jazz history, The John Coltrane Quartet. When Tyners association with Coltrane came to an end. John Coltrane was experimenting with a more atonal form of music that Tyner did not feel at one with. Striking out on his own, McCoy Tyner began an long musical career that took him through bebop, hard bop, Cuban jazz, modal jazz, mainstream jazz, third stream, and post-bop. He recorded nearly 80 albums under his own name, four of which brought him Grammys and in 2002, he was awarded Jazz Master from the National Endowment for the Arts. Today, McCoy Tyner continues to inspire generations of musicians, and his work is loved by multitudes. Happy Birthday, sir! Here, McCoy Tyner recorded live in a solo performance of Coltranes Giant Steps ~
