BIRTHDAY WISHES: Ian Paice was born on June 29, 1948 in Nottingham, England. Ian Paice has been the drummer for the rock band Deep Purple since their inception in 1968. Paice first began playing violin before switching to drums at the age of 15. He began his professional career in the late 50s playing drums in his father’s dance band. His early influences included Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Bobby Elliot (The Hollies), Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge), and Charles Connors (Little Richard Band). The first band he was in was called Georgie & the Rave-Ons, which after being renamed The Shindigs, released their first single featuring a 17-year old Paice. In 1966, Paice joined The MI5, which soon changed its name to The Maze and produced a number of singles recorded mainly in Italy and France. The band featured Rod Evans, who alongside Paice was to form the original lineup of Deep Purple in February 1968. During this time, Paice was also heavily involved in doing sessions for various artists from the stable of the famous 60s producer Derek Lawrence. While playing in Hamburg, Germany in 1968, respected session guitarist Ritchie Blackmore took note of Paice and arranged for him to audition for his group, Roundabout. Paice got the gig and Roundabout soon transformed into Deep Purple. The rest is history! To date, Ian Paice is the only member to appear on every album the band has released. Deep Purple are cited as one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The group has influenced numerous bands including Metallica, Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Alice in Chains, Pantera, Bon Jovi, Rush, Motörhead, and many of the ‘New Wave’ of British heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard. Rightfully so, Ian Paice has earned his place in music history as one of rock drumming’s most distinguished and influential players.
