BJP favours a comprehensive and expeditious enquiry into Coal Scam, welcomes questioning of ex-PM Manmohan Singh During the UPA tenure, every effort was made to stall investigations, shield Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and its political leadership who were the prime movers of the coal scam. CBI investigations have gathered pace in the last few months under the directions from the Supreme Court and CBI Special Court. This has become possible because of the totally independent functioning of the CBI under the present BJP-led government at the Centre. The BJP-led government at the Centre has maintained an ‘arms length’ from all criminal investigations allowing all the investigating agencies to do their work credibly and completely independently. This was a huge welcome change in approach from the days of Congress-led government’s subversion of all such institutions to hide all its misdeeds and to target its political rivals. In this context, the BJP welcomes CBI’s questioning of former-PM Manmohan Singh on the directions of the CBI Special Court Judge on November 24. The same Judge observed yesterday, “even the working of the officers of the PMO also does not appear to be above board’.’ The then Prime Minister was also coal minister in the UPA-1 tenure and most of the illegal allotments happened during his tenure as Coal minister. The then PMO, which was being run under directions of the Congress leadership has also come under the sharp criticism of the Hon’ble Judge hearing all cases pertaining to criminal conspiracy and corruption in coal scam. Coal-Gate is arguably India’s largest scam of independent India and Congress government between 2004 and 2014 was manifestly India’s most corrupt government ever. It was BJP’s complaints to Central Vigilance Commission in May 2012 that led to investigations into illegal coal block allocations by. People of India have delivered a decisive blow to the Congress in 2014 parliamentary elections and the state assembly elections thereafter. But electoral defeats alone do not square up black deeds of corrupt regimes. CBI has so far registered around 36 FIRs in coal scam. Most of the accused are promoters of private companies and a few public officials. The massive coal scam could not have been scripted without a strong political nexus between Congress leadership and allotters. There is circumstantial evidence in public domain to show the linkages between the allotters and the political leadership of the ruling party at the time. The BJP expects a comprehensive enquiry covering all the actors - private, public and political – involved in perpetrating coal scam to unravel the entire criminal conspiracy behind the humongous coal scam. The coal scam investigations have been delayed and the apex court had expressed its displeasure to CBI on some occasions. The BJP requests the Central Vigilance Commission and all the investigative agencies including the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax authorities working directly under the supervision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court to conduct the probe into the coal scam expeditiously, objectively and comprehensively. Under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji, the BJP-led government at the Centre is fully committed to restoring the faith of the common man in the integrity of our governance system. This requires that all perpetrators of different scams are prosecuted and punished expeditiously without fear or favour. (ER.
