BK: August 27, 2013 at 8:12 pm (Quote) My argument for the acceptance of Yale’s partnership to NUS will be the same argument why internet should be allowed in Singapore even though there are significant obstacles to Free Speech by the PAP Government. The glaring ranking of The Straits Times at 141 out of 169 by ‘Reporters Without Borders’ is indicative of the control that the Government has over Free Speech, but you cannot extrapolate from that, to conclude that the citizenry’s natural political awareness is not ready for more subtle nuances of Freedom. In fact, just as the internet had perforated the illiberal and opaque Government machinery with new information and alternative perspectives, Yale’s inroad into Singapore can help make liberal education more alive and relevant for our young people, and challenge the current discourse of a ‘managed democracy’. From the perspective of intellectual accumulation, it wont hurt. Obviously, there is the business part of this partnership. The medium term trend suggests that the educational hub in Singapore can grow to 5% of GDP; having Yale is not unlike signing a Michael Jordan or Tiger to endorse your brand. And while the Yale faculty members have their right to raise concerns, and every right to protect their cherish traditions, as a Singaporean, I hope & speculate that Yale will add more to us both in intellectual and branding contents.
