BKS IYENGAR - YOGA GURU PASSES AWAY ------------------------------------------------------------ The last one month has been a period of mourning for me.First it was our Ex GM Srimmolanathan who mentored me during my formative years in Canara Bank. Now it is BKS Iyengar, the renowned yoga Guru based in Pune. Both were like anchors to me at the most important phases of my life ,on whom I reclined when ever I needed intellectual and emotional support. After I was afflicted with a neuro muscular problem in 1984, I went practically on a wild goose chase looking for amelioration.Having been sensitised that best solution is in alternative disciplines of medicine ,YOGACHARAYA was one of the persons I submitted myself into in 1991.For almost 3 years I was a deligent and proud student of his school in Pune . Every Wednesday between 6 to 8 under his watchful eyes I was undergoing a rigorous therapy. He was an extremely demanding teacher who will chide you if your efforts do not measure up to his expectation. But behind the tough exterior was a considerate mind .He will calibrate the progress in his own characteristic way and provide you the sentimental support . Monetary considerations never influenced him.His commitment saw no barriers in RAJAMATA OF GWALIOR, LALITHA POWAR, OR JUST PLAIN ME( all of them were my fellow students). No respite from the rigours of his teaching either. He was replica of a guru in vedic times who were just not teachers but foster parents to the wards. I owe my mobility and above all the self conviction on my physical capabilities to this great teacher.Just to buttress this point: During my last 9 months in Pune sojourn, I had to scooter 49 kms to and fro from Lullanagar to Pimpri and back.It was quite excruciating even for a person with normal physique.I did it gamely. I bow my head in reverence to my Guru and his memories.I am beholden to him for lending a semblance of normalcy to my physical gait. My Pranams to him.A devout Bhakta of Anjaneya, he would have found his rightful abode near the PADAM OF SRIRAMA.May his soul rest in peace.
