*BLACK HISTORY FACT* Eunice Hunton Carter an African American - TopicsExpress

*BLACK HISTORY FACT* Eunice Hunton Carter an African American lawyer was born on this date in 1899. Carter was the first black woman to receive her law degree from Fordham Law School and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1934. After a short time in private practice, she began working in the district attorney’s office handling low-level criminal prosecutions. While working with several prostitution cases, she suspected a link. Eunice Carter noticed the defendants using the same stories, being represented by the same law firms, and if fined, the same bondsmen would appear. Based largely on Eunice Carter’s research, special prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey ordered a major raid on about eight brothels, providing her with enough evidence to convict the top Mafia leader in New York. After her role in what had been the largest organized crime prosecution in U.S. history, Dewey (who was elected New York District Attorney in 1937), appointed Carter head of the D.A.s Special Sessions Bureau. #JoeMadison #SiriusXM #History #UrbanView SiriusXM Urban View
