BLACK HISTORY FACTS THAT HAPPEN ON THIS DATE OCTOBER 9TH: Benjamin Banneker, inventor, surveyor, mathematician, astronomer, and one of the planners of what is now Washington, DC, died on this date in 1806. Mary Ann Shadd, publisher of the Provincial Freeman, was born in Wilmington, DE, on this date in 1823. As publisher of this Canadian antislavery paper, Shadd became the first woman on this continent to publish a newspaper. Ernest Nathan "Dutch" Morial, the first Black mayor of New Orleans, LA, was born there on this date in 1929. Morial was also the first Black Law School graduate of Louisiana State University in 1954. The White House released a statement, in 1940. which said that government "policy is not to intermingle colored and white enlisted personnel in the same regimental organizations." The African nation of Uganda gained its independence on this date in 1962. Professional baseball player, Frank Robinson,becomes the manager of the Cleveland Indians and the first Black manager of a major league team, in1975.
