BLINK AND YOULL MISS IT. This is just a little tidbit and certainly NOT earth-shattering...just something to add to our general knowledge about Terre Hautes history. Heck, it might even be one of those things you can spring on a group of friends and say, I know something YOU dont and kinda temporarily, be the Big Man On The Block -sorta. Our courthouse is surrounded by a stone courtyard made up of what appears to be quarried limestone or sandstone. As I recall reading somewhere, the area inside the courtyard was used as a marketplace by townspeople. After dark, if you walk along the south side of the courthouse, on the sidewalk, heading east, walk right to the corner block of stone and stop. Count back (5) horizontal stone blocks (coming back westward) and with a strong LED type of flashlight, do the following: Hold the flashlight (sideways) right against the stone aiming the light beam east; you are trying to get the harshest oblique or sidelighting under the circumstances you find there. When the stones were worked into shape, the face of the stone was peeled away and letters were left behind in relief. It reads: PUBLIC MARKET, and can only be seen this way. Dont throw tomatoes at me; I said upfront this wasnt going to be earth-shattering...but Im sure not many folks have ever seen it because you either have to wait for the middle of summer to get here with a very harsh oblique sunset raking across it just right (and for very short duration) or use this flashlight trick...
