BLITZ MAGAZINE ROAD TRIP: AN AFTERNOON WITH CKWWS CHARLIE OBRIEN With the onset of Spring, it was time for Blitz Magazine to embark upon another road trip. First stop: Windsor, Ontario, where on Sunday the 6th of April (after an inspiring morning at Windsor Christian Fellowship, listening to guest evangelist Peter Pretorius deliver a most impacting message), we got together at Tim Hortons (aka Timmys) with one of rock and roll radios most respected and still active pioneers, CKWW-AM Program Director, Charlie OBrien. A veteran of Drake flagship CKLW The Big 8, Charlie now oversees day to day operations at Windsors 580AM, which recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. At CKWW, it is not uncommon to hear such format staples as Shelley Fabares Johnny Angel, Major Hooples Boarding Houses Im Running After You and the Righteous Brothers Hung On You interspersed with such far above average fare as Mandalas Opportunity, the Guess Whos rendition of Buffalo Springfields Flying On The Ground Is Wrong, Shirley Matthews Big Town Boy and Barry Allens utterly stupendous cover of Mickey and Sylvias Love Drops. A gifted orator and photographer who counts such greats as the Beach Boys and Monkees as essential listening, Charlie has done much to rescue the Greatest Hits of All Time format from the narrow playlist perspective that has dogged it at many a station for the past several decades.
