BLOGGER MONDAY Lucinda, trainee: Welcome to the tax department! Doesn’t sound too exciting? Read on and you might be surprised… The most common misconception is that we spend all day calculating our clients’ tax bills. In fact I have barely picked up a calculator the whole time I’ve been here (we leave the number crunching to others!) Most of the work I do day to day is in support of our banking, corporate, international capital markets and real estate departments, reviewing their deal documentation and making sure all the provisions related to tax are working as they should. So I get to see a bit of everything that the firm is working on (which is usually pretty interesting stuff) and analyse it in depth. On top of this, I also have been involved in drafting internal research memos on various aspects of UK tax law to assist the more senior members of the department. Brain meltdown often occurs. The UK has the longest tax code in the world, and everything in it is very complicated, very involved, and actually very interesting (no - really). To add an extra dimension of difficulty it is also changing constantly- and it is all very topical at the moment! So if you like being challenged and constantly learning new things, this is a good place to be.
