BLOOD SUCKING FLIES! One week after trudging my way into the world of Ultra running (not an official race...and slow enough to not post the Strava record)...I was introduced to sheer terror!! Doing another training run...Carol suggested we... Do a late run, so I could get used to the headlamp (and exhaustion...not mentioned) and to avoid the heat of the day We started out at 8:00 pm...and headed to the Confluence Park trail...which follows the creek. Shaded, cool breeze and mostly a gently sloping trail for the first three miles. We had barely started when I felt a small sting on my leg...looking down, expecting a mosquito, I spotted the above pictured demon fly. I quickly found out that they can fly faster than I can run...they really can bite/stab/gut a human being...they have no mercy...and they dont mind dying for the cause. I also found that its possible to run 6 miles over a 3 mile stretch...Im sure I looked like a Soul Train reject...and uttered words and sounds not associated with civilized living. After a tortuous climb out of the death zone...I found Carol waiting patiently at the top...we went on to finish the rest of the run sometime after midnight. Despite the first three miles, we had a great time...but I did learn one crucial bit of information...fast people love running with slower people. It can save a life...theirs...survival of the fittest :(. Time for some speed work!!
