BLOWOUT WIN GIVES GINEBRA SHARE OF LEAD One doesn’t see a run as big as 22-0 in a basketball game so often. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel came through with this rare, sudden roll last night, paving the way for a 98-70 runaway win over Barako Bull that lifted the Kings to joint first place in the PLDT Home Telpad PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Tuesday night. The Kings came out smoking from the halftime huddle, shaking off a listless first half and erasing the stigma of their loss the last time out as they suddenly blew past the Energy and caught up with the Talk n Text Tropang Texters and the San Mig Coffee Mixers at 4-1. Barako Bull, meanwhile, slid deeper down the cellar with a fifth straight loss following a triumphant conference debut versus the Meralco Bolts. The Kings groped for form early on, dragged to a 33-all tie by the Energy in the first half. At the break, coach Jeffrey Cariaso and his troops decided they would leave their tentativeness in the locker room. LA Tenorio, making only 11 points a game in the conference, matched his points average and added five assists as he presided over their decisive third-quarter onslaught that broke the back of Barako. “Yung system namin offers equal opportunity to everyone offensively. Last game, si Mark (Caguioa) ang nagdala, before that si Greg (Slaughter) and Zach Mason. Nagkataon lang na ako naman ngayon,” said Tenorio who came through with 22 points in all in the game. “We got it as a team. At the half, sabi ng coaching staff we have to be aggressive especially defensively. Nagawa namin in the third quarter at nagkakumpiyansa na ang team,” Tenorio also said. “The best thing about tonight was that we showed character. We struggled in the first half but we hung in there through our defense. Sa second half, sumabay na ang opensa namin,” said coach Jeff Cariaso. The Kings came out working both ways in the second half, pulling away at 80-51 after their 22-0 roll. With the game practically over with over eight minutes left to play, both teams decided to rest their big guns. For the Kings, getting some minutes to strut their stuff were third-string guys Bryan Faundo and Jens Knuttel. Both made a basket each to cheers from the Ginebra gallery. Mason and Slaughter came up with double-double numbers, combining for 27 points and 25 rebounds while Japeth Aguilar contributed 10 markers and five boards. The usually prolific Barako import Eric Wise finished with just 16 points on 5-of-18 field shooting.
