BOKARO: State labour commissioner PujaSinghal on Wednesday expressed concern over the findings which states that Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) is not complying with safety measures. She also found that the steel major is not following norms of labour issues and Factory Act provisions. Singhal, who inspected BSL, said there is a need for BSL to improve the condition so that the workers get a conducive environment. During her inspection along with chief inspector of factories Awadesh Kumar, Singhal pointed out several lapses in safety and Factory Act rules. She also spoke with the workers about the minimum wages they get and other things that bother them. Singhal, later, had a closed door meeting with chief executive officer (CEO), BSL Anutosh Maitra at his office. "I have discussed the points of safety issues which I found lacking with Maitra and he has assured that those areas will be looked into," she said. Singhal was also worried because of the rising fatal accidents in BSL. A contract worker died a couple of hours ago she entered the BSL plant for inspection. She asked Kumar to visit the spot and inquire into the matter. Singhal said she assessed three points including safety, labour issues and compliance of Factory Act provisions during the inspection. "I found that BSL has few safety officers. Besides, there are many workers who have never undergone safety trainings. The Hot Strip Mill of the plant lacks numbers of platforms installed at a height for safety of workers and several other things," she said. Singhal also said she has asked BSL to deploy at least 26 safety officers in the plant. Besides, whether they are casual or permanent, all of them should compulsorily undergo safety training. Those who have already undergone it should get a training certificate. Meanwhile, Singhal also visited Bokaro General Hospital where she met six workers and officials of Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS), who have been admitted because they sustained burn injuries in electrical flash incident in the unit last Friday. Singhal has constituted three member inquiry committee headed by Kumar who will visit the accident spot in CTPS plant on Thursday to inquire into the matter. Singhal also discussed various issues with the Bokaro DC Aarva Rajkamal.
