BOOK LAUNCH: The Limerick International Brigades Memorial Trust are proud to launch our book From the Shannon to the Ebro, the Limerick men who went to fight Franco.It will be launched on Friday 12th September in the Mechanics Institute, Hartstonge St selling at €10 each. Edited by our Chairperson Jack Bourke this anthology of essays and articles covers a range of topics from the socio-economic circumstances that motivated these Limerick men to join the Connolly Column to fight for the Second Spanish Republic, the biographies of the six Limerick men, the role of women during those years and the legacy of the Spanish Civil War. Commonly known as the poets war the chapters of this book are divided with poems from this war bringing the humanity behind the historical facts and figures to the reader. This book is for anybody interested in twentieth century history and Limerick. Contributors include historians who have written extensively on either that topic or era such as Richard Baxell. Richard is a research associate at the London School of Economics and a trustee of the International Brigade Memorial Trust. He is the author of a number of books and articles on the British volunteers in the Spanish Civil War. His latest book, Unlikely Warriors, published by Aurum Press, was short-listed for the 2013 Political Book Awards’ political history book of the year. Dr Ruan ODonnell is a senior lecturer with the Department of History in the University of Limerick and was also a Visiting Chair of Irish Studies at the Keough-Naughton Institute of Notre Dame, in Indiana. His research interests are Modern Irish, European and Australian history, The United Irishmen, imperialism; Irish revolutionary movements; commemoration. He presented a paper back in June at the Jim Haughey Summer School. Dr David Convery is currently work as a UK-based research assistant for a project at the University of Melbourne. His PhD thesis in history from University College Cork in 2012 was entitled Brigadistas: The History and Memory of Irish Anti-Fascists in the Spanish Civil War. Manus ORiordan has been SIPTUs Head of Research and has presented papers on the Connolly Column. Other contributors included John King, Director for the Irish Ancestry Research Centre, Limerick, LIBMT members such as Vice-Chairperson Mike McNamara, PRO Ger McCloskey, Secretary Tom Collopy and Emma Gilleece. We also have Mountcollins student Muireann Hickeys essay that won the 2013 FIBIs essay competition for all second level students in Ireland which was read in Madrid at the commemorations for the Battle of Jarama back in February. Her winning essay covers the women’s involvement in the Spanish conflict, in Spain itself and at home.Also we have an essay by Michelle ODonnell who did her Masters degree thesis in Museum Studies (University of Leicester) on the Spanish Holocaust, the treatment of women and the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.
