BORAC There is a medieval town called Borac situated on the top of karst Borac. In the ancient past Borac was a significant military, political and cultural center of medieval Serbia. The city of Borac was mentioned in founding charter of the monastery Zica, during the reign of king Stefan the First in the 13th century. Bloody battles were fought between Hungarian and Turkish army for conquering Borac. Our old Serbian chroniclers often mention that from 13th to 15th century in Borac many church books were printed, many projects for church and cultural endowments were made, for example projects for monasteries: Kamenac ( 1410.),Vracevsnica (1431.),Kalenic (1410.) and Manasija. In Borac rulers wrote charters, they signed commercial and political contracts with other countries (Dubrovnik Republic 1405.) Тhis contract was signed by Despot Stefan Lazarevic. Konstantin Juricek called this city the favorite residence of Despot Stefan Lazarevic. According to various chronicles the town on karst was destroyed by Sultan Murat the Second during his conquer of Serbia on the 1st August , 1438.Since then it lost its significance, in history books it was no longer mentioned as town because this place and its surroundings remained desert and uninhabited for many centuries. When the first settlers came in the early 15th century, it became a village. According to some earlier but also some resent research of our best experts it was established that the original church construction existed on current plateau since the time of king Dragutin between 1276 and 1282. The church was restored by King Dusan upon the request of clergy and people 1350. The church of Borac is related to names of some other well known Serbian rulers who used town Borac as their temporary summer residence, because there was the center of supreme authority of Serbian medieval state. The church was restored by King Lazar( 1383), Despot Stefan Lazarevic, and Radic Postupovic who was a great leader and regional Duke of Despot Djuradj Brankovic. In 1433,the church was destroyed many times by Hungarians coming from the North. In 1511, monks from monastery Blagovestenje restored the church. As written in the Chronicle, the church was under the administration of the monastery for 40 years until 1551. In the 16th century it was restored by Patriarch Makarije Sokolovic as evidenced by the inscription above the entrance door from the narthex to the nave of the church. After restoring the church, Makarije sent the best icon-painters from Athos in order to do church-painting. That iconography was not entirely saved. The last time the church was ravaged by the Turks during the uprising in Takovo on Palm Sunday 1815. By endeavor of Prince Milos the church was restored again in 1818. The same year, doors were set in the church and narthex. The current iconostasis was set in 1919. In 1971.the church was protected by the state for its historical and artistic value. The church is dedicated to Archangel Gabriel and it represents a great cultural and national treasure.
