BORN TODAY March 6th: (Dont forget to check out our ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC which is also on this site and LIKE/FOLLOW the AMERICANA MUSIC FOUNDATION to get your daily posts of daily history) 1893: Walter “Furry” Lewis (March 6, 1893 - September 14, 1981), Memphis blues guitarist and songwriter. Walter ‘Furry’ Lewis. Lewis was one of the old-time blues musicians who came out of music retirement as a result of the folk blues revival of the 1960s. He was the first guitarist to play with a bottleneck. He lost a leg in a railroad accident and opened for The Rolling Stones twice. Joni Mitchell wrote the song ‘Furry Sings The Blues’ after him. Lewis died on September 14th 1981, aged 88. Lewis was buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Sough Memphis. His grave bears two headstones; the second being purchased by fans. 1905: Bob Wills, born James Robert Wills (March 6, 1905 – May 13, 1975), American western fiddler, singer, songwriter and bandleader. Wills was known as the King of Western Swing. He was inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame in 1968 and accepted a citation from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in Nashville. Wills and the Texas Playboys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 (posthumously for Will) Will was recording an album with Merle Haggard in 1973 when he suffered a stroke that left him comatose until his death in 1975. He died at the age of 70 in Fort Worth, Texas. 1916: Red Callender (March 6, 1916 – March 8, 1992), jazz bassist. He died in his Saugus home from complications of thyroid cancer having just turned 76 a few days prior. 1918: Howard “Maggie” McGhee (March 6, 1918 – July 17, 1987), jazz trumpeter. McGhee was one of the first bebop jazz trumpeters (together with Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro and Idrees Sulieman) and he was featured with the orchestras of Andy Kirk, Charlie Barnet, Billy Eckstine and Count Basie. Drug problems would sideline McGhee for most to the 1950s but he resurfaced in the 1960s. In the 1970s taught music both in a class and out of his apartment. McGhee died at at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 69 years old. 1925: Wes Montgomery 1936: Sylvia Robinson, born Sylvia Vanderpool, sometimes referred to as “The Mother of hip-hop” (March 6, 1936 – September 29, 2011), singer who had the 1973 solo hit Pillow Talk on her own and Love is Strange with Mickey Baker as Mickey & Sylvia. She got her musical career rolling as a member of the duo Mickey & Slyvia which she was in from 1956 to 1959. In May of 1973 she received gold certification from the RIAA for her song “Pillow Talk”. In the 1970s Robinson became the founder/CEO of Sugar Hill Records along with her husband Joe Robinson. When Sugar Hill Records folded Slyvia Robinson (now divorced from Joe) formed Bon Ami Records in 1987. Robinson died in Secaucus, New Jersey from congestive heart failure at the age of 76. 1937: Domingo Samudio, stage name Sam the Sham, lead vocalist of Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, his first real break came with their first and biggest hit “Wooly Bully” which sold 3 million copies and reached the #2 spot on the Billboard charts staying there for 18weeks. 1939: Jerry Naylor, American country and rock singer as well as a broadcaster and inspirational speaker. Naylor became the lead singer lead singer of the Crickets after Buddy Holly died. The Crickets broke up in 1965 and Naylor went to doing solo work. 1944: Mary Wilson, vocalist of the Supremes who had the 1964 UK & US No.1 single Baby Love plus 11 other US No.1 singles.1945: Hugh Grundy, drummer of the Zombies who had the 1964 US No.2 & UK No.12 single Shes Not There. 1946: David Gilmour, songwriter and lead guitarist of Pink Floyd. Gilmour, joined Pink Floyd in 1968. David assumed control of Pink Floyd in 1985, after Roger Waters departure, creating the new Floyd album A Momentary Lapse of Reason with Nick Mason and Rick Wright. Gilmour was appointed a CBE in 2003 for his charity work. Released his first solo album David Gilmour in 1978. His solo 2006 album On A Island was UK #1 and US #6. Gilmore is also renowned for his solo work and collaborations with other artists including Kate Bush, Paul McCartney and Pete Townshend. 1946: Murray Head, UK singer who had the 1984 UK No.12 & 1985 US No.3 single, One Night In Bangkok. 1947: Kiki Dee, born Pauline Matthews, singer and actress singer and actress with the song Ive Got the Music In Me and her duet hit the 1976 UK & US No.1 single Dont Go Breaking My Heart with Elton John. As a session singer she worked with Dusty Springfield and also became the first white British artist to be signed by Motown Records, releasing her first Motown single in 1970. Dee now performs with guitarist Carmelo Luggeri. 1964: Stephen Bier, (Wayne Gacy), keyboards with Marilyn Manson who had the 1998 US No.1 album, Mechanical Animals and the UK No. 12 single, The Dope Show. 1970: Betty Boo, born Alison Moira Clarkson, English singer, songwriter and rap artist who had the 1990 UK No.3 single Where Are You Baby. Betty Boo is now a songwriter who wrote Pure and Simple for HearSay as well as hits for Girls Aloud. 1974: Guy Garvey, singer/guitarist with Manchester based group Elbow. Elbow won the Mercury Music Prize for their 2008 album The Seldom Seen Kid. 1974: Dwight Grant, born Beanie Sigel, American rapper. Beanie founded the group and label State Property, as well as the clothing company of the same name. 1977: Bubba Sparxxx (real name Warren Mathis) American Southern rapper. He has six singles that have charted in the U.S. Georgia. Sparxx has released 4 albums all of which have charted and has one scheduled for release in 2013 called Miracle on Gamble Road.
