BOTSWANA FOR TICAD FUNDING The director of Asia-Pacific Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC), Mr Clifford Maribe says Botswana is in the process of coming up with projects that could be funded through the Tokyo International conference on African development ((TICAD ) process of the government of Japan. In an interview, Mr Maribe said the assistance package offered by Japan at the TICAD V Summit could be utilised in a number of areas and contribute towards Botswana’s national development process. He said the areas which have been identified for development include private sector development, infrastructure development, human resources development and empowerment of farmers and youth. Mr Maribe said MOFAIC is in the process of consulting different stakeholders in both government and the private sector to prepare a list of projects to be submitted to the TICAD process for funding or technical assistance. He said the projects to be implemented under TICAD V would be approved at the TICAD V Ministerial Follow-up meeting next year. Mr Maribe said Botswana has benefited in the past from the TICAD process and the projects funded through TICAD initiative include, Kazungula Bridge, Mmamuno One Stop Border Post, 1.3 Mega Watt Solar power station in Gaborone, the Botswana Education TV, provision of solar panels to 30 primary schools and dispatch of Japanese volunteers to Botswana. Meanwhile last month the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Shinzo Abe announced at the TICAD V summit that his country would support African growth and development with an assistance package of US$32billion to be used in a five-year period commencing this year.(BOPA)
