BOUND FOR GLORY -- THE REAL STORY OF MY LIFE. Watching Bound for Glory on TCM. Truly wonderful film bio of Woodie Guthrie, who was later idolized by Bob Dylan. Cant remember who the star is, or much else to be truthful. A friend of mine called the other day. We talked about age and what comes with it. I told him dementia is really slamming me. He said, Yeah, we all have some of that. I didnt have the energy to tell him that I was serious. That it seems half my brain isnt working anymore. Like Rush Limbaugh -- Ill take on any liberal, with half my brain tied behind my back. But back to the film. This is a lovely treatment of Guthrie -- a dreamer with a big heart. He became famous for his gutsy stands against unions, corporate greed, and cruelty to the destitute. He penned many songs which lamented the plight of those on the bottom rung of life. I used to be that way. I longed for lonely dirt roads, old houses, a God whom I desperately sought, desperate songs of youth, and other dreams. In later years, I became hardened to the realities of life, and learned how the rootless dreamers became shiftless, dependent drifters -- a drain on society. I became a Christian conservative, which is where I reside today. I like it here. I stand for what I feel and believe. There is less romance and idealism. More pragmatism and realism. More God, whom Ive come to know again, as I did as a choir boy and acolyte in the liberal, cynical Episcopal Church of days long gone. But when I see a poignant films like Bound for Glory, I sense the loss of simpler days, dreams of cotton clouds, dew in the morning, and love for all mankind. I miss that sometimes. But when I became a man, I put away childish things. I have a job to do, and I will be doing it until I die. The America I love could use some citizens wholl stand up and defend her. And die for my country if required. Thats what my Lord had challenged me to be. I am truly ready for the sacrifice.
