BOYCOTT SHELLEYS DANCE AND COSTUME By Eddy Hawks LOS ANGELES, CA, November, 29, 2014 -- The time to open a new ballet store in Los Angeles is now and I will tell you why. First of all, there are very few ballet stores and the number of people dancing ballet is growing very quickly. Ballet is a hot commodity and opening a new ballet store would surely be lucrative. Especially when stores such as Shelleys Dance and Costume are giving bad service to customers and wrong information about which type of ballet shoes to wear. Any ballet professional knows that if you fit a dancer with the wrong ballet shoe because of size, width or type of shoe, the dancer will be at risk of getting a stress fracture or another worse type of injury on their feet and ankle, or even their knees. Today, Thelma, the manager at Shelleys Dance and Costume sold a professional ballet dancer from American Ballet of Los Angeles a pair of soft ballet training shoes by So Danca, which manufactures excellent ballet shoes. But soft ballet training shoes, made by any ballet shoe maker, are not meant to be worn by professional dancers. The reason why is because a soft ballet training shoe made of satin or any soft material, is for amateurs who are only learning the basics of ballet and will not be doing any type of ballet movement that puts heavy stress on the body and joints such as pirouettes and jumps. But if you sale a training ballet shoe to someone who will be taking an entire ballet class involving a ballet barre and center, with turns and big jumps, then the dancers foot will be at the risk of experiencing major stress and an injury. When I spoke to Thelma about this, she said it did not matter because according to her buying ballet shoes is only a matter of preference. I have been in the professional ballet world long enough to know that buying the right ballet shoes has nothing to do with preference. On the other hand, it has everything to do with buying the right shoe depending on what the dancer will be doing in class or on stage. Thelma of Shelleys Dance and Costume was insistent about arguing that buying ballet shoes is all about what people prefer without being reasonable or thinking that she might be wrong. If she continues with that type of erroneous and self-centered argument, I would recommend all professional ballet dancers in Los Angeles to boycott Shelleys Dance and Costume until they hire people that care about the safety of all ballet dancers.
