BRAND TASMANIA NEWS DEPARTMENT: 2 British comedian Bill Bailey, who performed in Tasmania earlier this year, has promoted Hobart enthusiastically to readers of London’s The Telegraph newspaper. In an interview published in the travel section of the paper Bailey, 49, said of the city: “It’s got everything I like about a city. It’s not too big, it’s next to the sea, it’s got a bit of history, lies in the shadow of a mountain and is just a stone’s throw away from some amazing countryside. “Plus, Hobart is a city with a pretty temperate climate, the locals are friendly and the beer is good.” Bailey, one of the best-known comedians in the UK, wasnt joking. Asked about the first thing a visitor to Hobart should do, he said: “I love to walk around the waterfront and Salamanca Place part of town, where convicts who were transported from Britain would have once walked. Hobart is still the jumping-off point for a lot of the research and scientific ships heading to the Antarctic, so you’ll often see one or two in the harbour preparing to head south, another reason to visit the waterfront area.” Bailey’s subsequent plug for the Henry Jones Art Hotel was accompanied by a telephone number and email address, so reception shouldn’t be surprised by a spike in British bookings.
