BRAVE SONS OF THE SOUTH POST: Letter No. 1 My Ancestors, relations of mine Grandma Singers side NOTE: readers, I reproduce this here with all mistakes exactly as they appear in the original. PROMISE, and I am getting good on this Ipad! Letter reproduced following spelling and format of original: Camp Near Charleston. Sept. 20/62. ( date suppose it wasnt 1900 yet, it assumed 1862) Dear Wife, It is with the greatest of pleasure that I take my pen to let know that I am well and that I went thro all the battles and was but little hurt, in the Battle of Fayettesville I was hit on the head with a Spent Ball But it dident Break the skin so the wound was very slight. But all can say that sixteen of the Brave Sons of the South fell to raise no more, an forty five were wounded, some has died since. We lost but few men at the Baptle of Charleston. The Yankees lost at Fayetteville in killed was Fifty two, and one hundred and Fifty wounded. I was at Aunt Betsy Egelsons last night in Charleston they are all well and send there love and best respects you and my folks. I have no more to write so do the best you can and may God Bless you and keep you from all harm and if we should never meet on earth let us strive to meet on Heaven.
