BRAZIL 2014| INDOMITABLE LIONS. Emmanuel Kondes analysis of the situation: «Two problems are handicapping national football in Cameroon. The first is politics and the selection of payers and the leadership of FECAFOOT. The center of Cameroon was, is, and always will probably be the Douala-Yaounde Axis. This axis is the most advanced area of Cameroon football. From this axis all the players and officers of Cameroon football ought to be drawn. For a very long time that was the norm. Then came 1990, at the World Cup in Italy, and the sheer wizardry of Roger Milla changed things for the worse. From 1990 onward Cameroon football was transformed into high stakes politics with respect to selection of the national squad. Not only did every region seek to be represented in the national team, but leadership of FECAFOOT was also contested by people ill-equipped for the task of administering the pride of the nation. In both the selection of the national squad and leadership of FECAFOOT a new policy of Affirmative Action, unwritten though it was, came to dominate the selection process as well as appointment of leadership of the Cameroon Football Federation. Behold the players representing Cameroon on the world stage! In everything these players mirror the incompetent leadership of FECAFOOT. From the center of Cameroon football leadership of FECAFOOT has been moved to the periphery because of the politics of Affirmative Action. The shame that has been brought to Cameroon by the 2014 squad is self-inflicted. It stems from a lack of foresight. Cameroon must return to the tradition of selecting the best and only the best from those at the center. In 1990 approximately 75% of the payers were drawn from the central orbit of Cameroon football. And they performed admirably well and beyond expectations. Milla and his teammates made Cameroon known to the world. It is time to dismantle affirmative action in Cameroon football. Let the best qualified play for the nation as Indomitable Lions, and let the best be placed at the helm of FECAFOOT. The incompetent leadership at FECAFOOT should be dismissed immediately.»
