*BREAKING NEWS* A 24-year veteran Tarboro Police officer was killed Tuesday morning after his vehicle collied with a North Carolina Department of Transportation excavator truck, according to authority. Patrolman Charles Johnson was pronounced dead on the scene. Johnson was driving his personal vehicle and was off duty. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and has not release pertinent details. According to the NCDOT, the driver of the truck was not injured. Tarboro Police Chief Damon Williams said the atmosphere at the department was somber. He was a good officer, Williams said.
