BREAKING NEWS: Microsoft to make $274 million expansion to data center CHEYENNE -- Microsoft announced today it plans to expand its data center operation in the North Range Business Park west of Cheyenne. In a news release, Gov. Matt Mead confirmed that the Microsoft data center, which opened in late 2013, is set to expand substantially, with Microsoft agreeing to invest $274 million in a new, second data center. That would bring Microsofts total investment in Cheyenne to nearly $500 million. Microsoft intends to buy additional land at the business park and plans to begin construction on the data center expansion in late spring. The first stage of the new data center is expected to be operational by summer 2015. Mead hailed the development as a major coup for Wyoming, where advantages like affordable energy, redundant fiber optics and a cool climate have made it a natural choice for data center operations. Wyoming has so many comparative advantages for data centers, Mead said. I have worked with the Legislature to position Wyoming as a competitive location for these high-valued projects. It is exciting to see these efforts produce results. I thank Microsoft for investing here and for the jobs and capital facilities it creates.
