BREAKING NEWS WEATHER: TROPICAL STORM ERIN UPDATED AUGUST 17,201 SATURDAY AT 5:00AM EDT LAT: 18.9 NORTH LON: 35.6WEST WINDS: 40 MILE PER HOUR PRESSURE: 29.71" MOVING: WEST NORTH WEST 15 MILE PER HOUR Erin Remains A Tropical Storm; No Threat To LandUPDATED 5 AM EDT, August 17, 2013UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Fred AllenRelated Content: Erin Satellite Image Erin Forecast Track Enlarge Erin is churning up the waters of the wide-open central Atlantic Ocean as a tropical storm for the start of the weekend. Ultimately, it will only pose a threat to shipping lanes through next week. As of 5 a.m. AST (EDT), Erin was located near 18.9 N and 35.6 W, or about 790 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands, and 2,860 miles east-southeast of Miami. Erin`s top sustained winds are 40 mph, barely making it a tropical storm. It is moving west-northwest at 16 mph. Its minimum central pressure is steady at 1006 mb, or 29.71 inches of mercury. Erin`s stay as a weak tropical storm will be short. By Sunday, it is likely to become a tropical depression as it encounters an increasingly unfavorable upper-level environment and begins to ingest dry air into its center circulation. Early next week will be no different, when these two factors combine in the ultimate demise of the Atlantic`s fifth named storm. The only hazard Erin poses will be squally bands of rain and wind producing large and dangerous waves across shipping lanes in the open central Atlantic Ocean through the middle of next week. Mid-August is the time of the season when the Atlantic basin ramps up with activity. Usually by the end of August, five named storms have formed, with three of those forming in August alone.
