BREAKING: Navy Statement tonight... Repairs on USS Miami ending due to limited funding from sequestration and higher than expected costs to repair the stricken sub damaged by arson in 2012. Likely blow to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, director of Undersea Warfare, says: "The decision to inactivate Miami is a difficult one, taken after hard analysis and not made lightly." Inspections revealed that due to Environmentally Assisted Cracking (EAC) in the steel piping and fasteners used in the air, hydraulic, and cooling water systems, a significant number of components in the torpedo room and auxiliary machinery room would require replacement. This increased the cost of the repair. Additionally, a review of other recent submarine repair efforts resulting from major damage revealed that the planned contingency funds were insufficient.
