BREAKING #PunaLavaFlow NEWS: Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense officials announced tonight they will open the Railroad Avenue emergency bypass route at Noon this Saturday (December 20) to give the community a chance to familiarize themselves with conditions and the amount of time it will take them to travel to their destinations on the two-lane crushed-gravel roadway. The 10.1 miles connects Kapoho to Hawaiian Paradise Park at Makuʻu Drive. According to Hawaiʻi Countys website, the intention is for the evacuation route will be open to sedans, SUVs, small trucks, vans, buses and delivery trucks at 20 mph. As of 6 p.m. tonight, the leading edge of the lava flow is 0.6 miles from the intersection of Highway 130 and Pāhoa Village Road and experts say if it maintains its current speed, it is expected to reach there in the next 6 days.
