BREAKING: Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has thrown his support behind Local Government Minister David Crisafulli after calls for a full scale inquiry into the handling of the de-amalgamation of the Tablelands Regional Council. Last night, the Kuranda District Residents Group – a lobby group formed to oppose the de-amalgamation – unanimously backed a motion calling for Mr Newman to “instigate an inquiry into the actions of Minister Crisafulli who ignored the recommendation of the Minister-appointed Boundaries Commissioner Colin Meng.” KDRG believe that Mr Crisafulli “has breached his responsibilities as required by the Queensland Ministerial Code of Conduct”. Today, a spokesperson for Mr Newman released a statement expressing the Premier’s support for Mr Crisafulli and the way the de-amalgamation was handled. “Local Government Minister David Crisafulli has been upfront with the community throughout this entire process about the advice and costs involved in a de-amalgamation,” the spokesperson said. “The report quoted by the Kuranda District Residents Group was released by the Minister prior to the vote and he took every opportunity to ensure people were well informed. “The community overwhelmingly voted in favour of establishing a Mareeba Shire Council and the process to make this happen is well underway.” At Monday night’s meeting KDRG decided not to pursue a legal challenge against the de-amalgamation.
