BRICS MUST OPPOSE PATENTING OF LIFE FORMS China and India are two centres of huge biological diversity. India alone had 19,000 rice varieties stolen by SYNGENTA [a Swiss firm], and we still have 400 varieties of Brinjal. Monsanto [a US firm] wants to patent Brinjal. Two issues here: (a) we do not need Genetically modified foods and (b) No one, not one country, should allow patenting of life forms. BRICS can take a lead. If the US corporations insist, BRICS should leave WTO and scrap patenting laws that are against basic human right to food. If EU and US go on the way they have, almost all food crop seeds would be patented. The best course of action is to leave them to their own devices while BRICS work on an alternative model of food security and food sovereignty. Meanwhile, BRICS should stop importing any food from the US because American foods are genetically engineered and poisonous. The Un has declared 2015 as the Year of the Soil. This is vital. Healthy soils grow healthy foods and healthy foods give us health. If one eats three meals a day, that means one is eating 1195 times on the year. If the food is contaminated with chemicals and alien proteins, as in Genetically engineered foods, our body bio-accumulates poisons and toxins. Hence, we must completely reject American foods and any European foods that are not honest. We need honest foods.
