BRIEF HISTORY OF CARAMORAN The early Spanish missionaries who came to Catanduanes landed in Napacahan, a sitio of Tubli where they established a Parish See which lasted for many years. In that church, St. John, the Baptist was venerated as the Patron Saint. The ancient history of Caramoran disclosed that the original town site was the Napacahan. But due to the relentless and repeated raids by the Moro pirates during the 17th and 18th centuries, the settlement was transferred to the present location where the Moros could not easily anchor because of the barrier of the reefs. Over a hundred years after the Spanish sovereignity was established in 1570, Caramoran was founded as a town in 1676 by the side of the present Catholic Church. During those days, Catanduanes was composed of only two municipalities, the first was Viga which was founded in 1619 during the incumbency of Governor-general Manuel de Leon. While the Catholic Church had existed without interruption since its formation, the municipal government lost its status when Caramoran was fused natives of Caramoran under the leadership of Don Camilo Rubio. Then, Congressman Francisco Perfecto authored a bill to recreate Caramoran as municipality. To hasten the re-establishment of the town, President Elpidio Quirino on august 29, 1948, issued Executive Order No. 159 re-creating the municipality of Caramoran. The new Caramoran is a rhythm of the warm rays of the rising sun and brunt of the Pacific waves. Mother nature made its soil fertile for rice, coconut and sugbo. An ample supply of fish is a source of livelihood of the people. The white beach and sparkling sea water of Toytoy and Sabang, the waterfalls known as “Ba-haw Awinis” and “Caragag” are the significant spots for the delights of excursionists. The outreach of the Hilacan River, the main source of irrigation, the beauty of which is reflected upon the town folks who are bound by the principle of love and unity.
