BROOKSVILLE -- Officials are warning residents of a phone scam that has been reported in Hernando County. According to the Hernando County Sheriffs Office, the one ring scam is part of a practice called phone cramming, and it works as follows: Your phone will ring once or twice, and the phones caller ID will show as Unknown or an unfamiliar long-distance area code. By the time you answer the call, no one is on the other end of the phone. There will be no voice mail left, so some people have tried calling back only to find no one has answered or to hear a weird noise on the other end. Often people will find themselves billed for the incoming international call if they answered the phone, as well as a premium service, which typically appears as a $19.95 charge The following area codes have been used in the scam: 242 - Bahamas 441 - Bermuda 784 - St. Vincent & Grenadines 246 - Barbados 473 - Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique 809, 829, 849 - Dominican Republic 264 - Anguilla 649 - Turks and Caicos 868 - Trinidad and Tobago 268 - Antigua 664 - Montserrat 876 - Jamaica 284 - British Virgin Islands 758 - St Lucia 869 - St. Kitts & Nevis 345 - Cayman Islands 767 - Dominica Officials said the scam has been confirmed by the Better Business Bureau. They are asking residents to not answer phone calls that show up as unknown on their caller ID.
