BRUTHEN TRAGEDY: An Arrest for Murder Married only six months ago, Mrs.Eileen Waddell, 29, was shot dead ather home on a farm beside the Nicholson River, near Bruthen, on Friday night. Her husbands brother, Clement Michael Waddell, 44 has been charged with having murdered her. Mrs Waddell died at the house before a doctor brought by Clement Waddell arrived. After having driven........into .....reported to the police what had happened. Before her marriage, Mrs. Waddell was Miss Eileen Murphy, of Bruthen. Her husband, Wilfred James Waddell,32, owns a farm on the Nicholson River at the end of a bush track of the Bairnsdale - Bruthen Road. Clement Waddell lived with them. He and his brother conducted the farm on a share basis. A dispute occurred between thebrothers over their shares in the propertyand Mrs. Waddell joined in the argument. She and her.husband wereseated together on a couch in the sitting room. About 10.30 p.m. Clement went to the room off the back verandah and returned to the sitting room door with a pea rifle. One shot was fired. Mrs Waddell put up her left hand to shield herself and the bullet went through her hand and into the left side of her chest. Clement Waddell immediately went for the doctor. The body was taken to Bairnsdale. Monday 12th 1942 I believe!....
