BTO SPONSORS SKY DIVING EVENT The Botswana Tourism Organization (BTO) has introduced the first ever Botswana International Sky Diving event titled: Makgadikgadi Epic, which will be hosted at the Nata Bird Century. Thabo Dithebe, the acting chief executive officer for the BTO said his organisation, in partnership with SkyDive Botswana and Nata Conservation Trust, developed another tourism product that adds to the diversity of tourism offering in Botswana. The Makgadikgadi Epic will take place from August 15 to 17. Dithebe said the Makgadikgadi Epic would enhance the spread of economic and social benefits related to the tourism sector to the beneficiary communities of the Nata Conservation Trust and Botswana as a whole. He however noted that though sky diving was a relatively new sport in Botswana and had not yet achieved the popularity enjoyed by other codes such as football, volleyball, athletics and others. Dithebe said organisers believed that sky diving had the potential to achieve similar levels of popularity among the domestic as well as regional market and to attract sponsors to raise the goodwill of Botswana as an authentic sporting and adventure tourism destination. He said in planning for the Makgadikgadi Epic, every necessary process was undertaken to ensure realisation of the ideal and they encourage all prospective attendants of this event as well as participants to comply with requirements as set out by specific environmental laws and policies. Tafa Tafa, a member of the business development team for the Makgadikgadi Epic, said there would be quad and motor biking, canoeing, boat rides and talks with the professional sky divers. A representative of Skydive Botswana, Garai Makaya, said the team that would take part in the event was made up of Batswana. Makaya explained that sky divers were internationally licensed civilians who participated in the sport for recreation, competition or both. All the sky divers hold internationally recognized sky diving licenses ranging from A to D, with A meaning the most junior skydiving licence while B, C, and D being for senior skydivers. He said experts at the Makgadikgadi Epic would include event organizer, chief instructor, safety officer, manifest officer, tandem master/instructor, load organizers, rigger and packers for safety of all participants.
