BTW, to all my friends who are not particularly tech savvy, dont believe the hype that computers only have a few years life expectancy. What happens is that as you use the computer over time the drive becomes more and more fragmented with all the data you keep adding and deleting. Most of the slowing of your computer you notice is due to this, not the outdatedness of the computer. If you periodically back up, wipe your hard drive and do a clean reinstall you will notice the performance speed return. This is particularly necessary if you demand a lot from your computer. You can easily get 4-5 years out of a good machine. The other thing to watch for is these companies are constantly upgrading their OS. The new OS versions are primarily designed for their latest machines and might not necessarily work better on an older machine. I would suggest not just automatically upgrading, but instead check to see if the new features are something you really need. If what you have does everything you need, perhaps upgrading is unnecessary. To clarify, I am talking about the major upgrades like Maverick to Yosemite, not the free updates that are normally released to fix bugs etc. Theyre generally positive.
