BUILD MUSCLE and youll LIVE LONGER. I bet lots of you are doing some kind of cardio---walking, running, cycling, elliptical. Thats fantastic and keep it up. However, you HAVE to stay strong as well. NEW RESEARCH now confirms that those people who maintain their muscle mass are less likely to die prematurely from all causes. This also confirms my usual rant and rave about the fact that its body composition, not scale weight, that determines your overall health and wellbeing. Stop fretting over scale weight, and pay attention to how much muscle mass you have, and if its toned and youre optimally strong for your age and gender. When you do this, your body fat will fall into line as well. Muscles are the calorie burning engine of the body and the more you have, and the more actively trained it is, the more efficiently youll burn calories. I am NOT advocating you live in a gym. Frankly, as Ive written in my books, you can do what you need to do right in your own living environment. You can use your own body weight for so many great strengthening exercises, like sitting in a chair and simply doing straight leg raises to keep your quads in great shape. Or putting your back to the wall and scooting down to a sitting position for more quad strengthening. Lots more you can learn! Scope out this nifty graphic to get you started.
