BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD Starts 1st of September......... The NSW Rural Fire Service Shoalhaven District is advising that the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) commences from 1 September 2013. During the BFDP any person wishing to light a fire will require a permit in the Shoalhaven. “With conditions becoming more conducive to its spread, people need to be extremely careful when using fire,” said Superintendant Mark Williams. “Anybody wishing to light a fire on their property during the Bush Fire Danger Period will require a permit which can be obtained free of charge from their local fire station or Fire Control Centre. “However, permit holders still need to adhere to permit conditions as well as monitor weather conditions in their area. Also, they need to check whether a Total Fire Ban or Very High Fire Danger is in place before lighting any fires,” said Supt. Williams Supt. Williams is also encouraging residents to have a Bush Fire Survival Plan, so all members of the household know what to do on days of increased fire danger, and if their home is threatened by fire. “With the current winds and increased fire activity we have seen across the region over the past couple of weeks, people need to be vigilant around fire and make sure that on completion of the burn, all remaining materials are extinguished. “We have all seen the devastation that bush fires can bring to a community, so I strongly urge people to make contact with their local brigades who are only too willing to provide expert fire advice and assistance to landholders in planning and preparing for what looks like a long hot and dry summer,” said Supt. Williams “Remember, Never leave a fire unattended and if a fire does escape, it is essential to call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond accordingly and minimise the damage.” For more information contact Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre on 02 4424 4424 or visit rfs.nsw.gov.au
