BUSINESS UPDATE WITH Orange Government is in the process of engaging in talks with the Democratic Republic of Congo, over the possibility of the two neighboring countries furthering their trade ties. Trade minister Amelia Kyambadde says the talks are intended to pave way for more penetration of Uganda’s exports into the large DRC market, thereby reducing reliance on the troubled South Sudan. Speaking during the opening of the Trade Facilitation Expo ,Kyambadde said the talks will be held in the next two months so that traders and manufacturers, especially those affected by the South Sudan civil war can take refuge in the large DRC market as the situation in South Sudan stabilizes. Democratic Republic of Congos President Joseph Kabila has fired the chief executive of the countrys state mining company Geca mines over gross negligence. The decision follows government’s stern warning to Geca mines last year against selling the countrys assets without its approval, highlighting concerns over the transparency of mining deals and the running of the firm. Geca mines management has also been criticised by the International Monetary Fund for a lack of transparency in the sale of assets following concerns that stakes in projects had been sold for considerably less than their market value. The government of Kenya has embarked on a plan to develop 10,000 kilometres of roads across the country in a bid to stimulate economic growth. In an ambitious plan that is expected to make a five per cent contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the roads sub-sector, the government will, by December this year, roll out construction of the roads to be built within five years. The first phase will comprise 2,000 kilometres and is expected to start before the end of this year and be completed during the 2015/16 financial year. Emirates Airline will stop flying over Iraq to protect its passengers from the threat of Islamic militants on the ground.
