BYPASS CHARLOTTESVILLE COMPLETELY? There are plans in the works to create an expressway down route 29 through Charlottesville, starting at Rio Road, that will cost HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars and make 29 North a complete mess for 2 - 5 years, just like theyve done at route 250 and McIntire Road. I dont know about you, but Ive been avoiding that part of town for the past year because its torn up, ugly and it takes forever to get through that intersection. There are local businesses there where I no longer go to shop, not because of anything that they have done wrong, but simply because I dont want to have to deal with that mess. Well, now the county of Albemarle wants to do the same thing at Route 29 and Rio Road, creating an underpass that will take people right by that intersection without ever seeing the businesses (including PJ Networks!) along that section of route 29 or even knowing that they exist; instead, they will get to see a retaining wall on both sides, just like you see down in Richmond or up in Northern Virginia when you drive through those beautiful areas. This is the master plan: s3.amazonaws/cville/cm%2Fmutlimedia%2F20140508-29-panel-recommendations.pdf and this is your chance to Vote on it: cvilletomorrow.org/news/article/18073-rio-interchange-proposal/. There is an Albemarle County Board of Supervisors meeting at the Albemarle County building at 410 McIntire Road THIS TUESDAY AT 6PM, and YOU will have a chance to come out and speak your mind about this project, which will make route 29 North a miserable place to drive through for the next 2 to 5 years (they want to do 4 or 5 more intersections just like this one all the way down to Barracks Road). Please come out and show them that you care. This is one of those changes that will affect Charlottesville FOREVER, and if we dont like how this project turns out there will be no way to change things back to how they used to be - how they are right now. Personally, I LIKE the fact that Charlottesville has managed to remain beautiful and hang on to that small-town charm after over 200 years - lets not let them turn it into just another city! Thank you, -PJ
