Baba Muktananda: tiLL DEBT dO uS pArt ~ Baba #Muktananda on Debts: I am very much against asking for anything. I have never asked anything from anyone in my life and if from anywhere I have asked, I have done some work in return. Being a renunciant, even then I have never eaten anything for free. In some ashram I have picked soil, in some have done farming, somewhere sweeping and in some have picked up cow-dung. In this manner in every ashram I ate anything; there I have worked so much that I would not be left Indebted to the ashram. I never remained indebted to any ashram I stayed in. Even now, for a handful of food grain, I work hard and don’t get indebted to anyone. My Guru, Bhagawan #Nityananda would just remain seated even if he was thirsty and never even asked for water. ~ Debt is a very bad weapon always chasing us. Do anything and it will not leave you. But those who do not want to get indebted to anyone or want to return it back, if they do, then even God helps them. Once a man came up to me and said; ‘Babaji, I have a burden of debt on my head and want to remove it.’ I replied; ‘Something will happen’ and soon he had cleared his debts easily. ~ That is why I do not allow any of my devotees to stay in the Ashram without doing hard work, even if he happens to be my most dearest of dear devotee. The more the devotee is dear to me, the more I make him work, so that he does not become indebted to the ashram. If you come to the ashram and just eat, sleep, enjoy and go back, then all your merits will be absorbed by the ashram and you will be left empty. Whereas, if you come and do lots of seva, then you will absorb the merits from the ashram. There are people who lack devotion and just to eat, come to the ashram regularly during the meals, I do allow them. But, if some needy people come then I do give them food/clothes without them even asking for it. ~ One sage said: By eating others food, one’s tongue becomes powerless, by taking others donations, one’s hands become impoverished. Repeatedly thinking about good or bad corrupts the heart. For such a being, which austerity will bear fruit or which spiritual powers can he acquire? That is why I do not give money to anyone. I do not let anyone form a habit of asking money also. If I have to give, I will give Food and Clothes but then to only those who are needy and not to any lazy or anyone who wants to live dependent on others. ~ Even God gets indebted to his devotees and thus has to clear his debts too. A short story to exemplify this: In Maharashtra, there was a female Saint – Janabai, whose Guru was ‘Namdev’. #Janabai was very devoted to God and her Guru. She used to do Guru-seva the whole day and at night used to chant the name of Panduranga. She practiced austerities with a lot of devotion. She never asked or took anything from #Namdev nor desired any wish from God. She had only love for God. Every morning she got up at 3 o’clock to grind wheat in the hand mill while singing hyms for her Lord Panduranga who himself used to come and help her in grinding the wheat. Once, other devotees saw this and questioned Panduranga; ‘God, why are you doing this?’ #Panduranga replied; ‘What can I do, Janabai never took anything from Namdev nor did she ever ask anything from me, so I have become indebted to her and so to clear that debt I accompany her in Grinding the wheat!’ ~ If any human lives a life with discipline and hard work, he will never be in a lack of food or clothes. There is lot in store with God. One should not lead a life being lazy by just sleeping, eating or roaming after others asking for things and thereby degrading one’s self value to zero. ~ sOUrce: सत्संग - बाबा मुक्तानंद के साथ प्रश्‍नोत्तरि photo: babamuktananda
