Baby Clothes: Fabrics and Washing Unfortunately, the most impractical fabrics are often the most alluring. Bypass that soft chenille baby ensemble; it will spend more time in the dirty clothes pile than on your baby. Buy clothes that say machine washable on the label, as you probably wont have the time or energy to hand-wash or iron baby clothes. Look for fabrics that are soft and light, and that breathe, allowing the moisture on babys skin to evaporate. Clothes made from 100% cotton are ideal, as they are comfortable, durable, and wash well. Wash new clothes before your baby wears them. This not only cleans them; it makes them softer and may help prevent skin rashes in babies with sensitive skin. Follow fabric care labels when laundering baby clothes. Its not necessary to buy special baby detergent or to wash babys clothes separately from those of the rest of the family. But because baby skin is more sensitive than older skin, use a gentle detergent free of dye and perfumes to prevent rashes or an allergic reaction. In general, less is more with baby laundry: avoid using bleach, dryer sheets, or fabric softener. Wash flame-retardant clothes in laundry detergent, not soap, as soap will wash out the retardant.
