Back again lol: Problem this time = virus; yes another one - this time a rootkit, one that roots itself deep into the protected files of the operating-system and hides in them. I took a chance & downloaded free office software. - Big mistake. Despite refusing all the offers of malware-ridden crap software they installed it for me anyway. Most of it was a doddle to get rid of - but I have to admit defeat by this rootkit, called TNT2User: It prevented me connecting to Windows Update by unregistering the service and corrupting the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) files, plus it slowed this craptop to a crawl. - Oh and Ive become victim to the Dell laptop bug: Plugged in but not charging. - So I wont be using battery power. - Not that the battery lasts more than 3 hours anyway. - This machine is quite old; but still runs Windows 7 with all the updates + SP1 well nonetheless. As I said earlier Im running 32-bit Win 7 - and it looks like I did the right thing by choosing to do that, as not much of the Dell proprietary software exists in 64-bit versions in the case of this particular laptop. - Most of the later software is labelled Windows Vista 32-bit; which works great on Win 7 32-bit as expected. So yeah I been burning the midnight oil, the proverbial candle at both ends, and basically hypergeeking. I miss being able to make music though: I took delivery of my new box today; the physical upgrading was too easy - I havent lost any of that geek-girl-flair lol, and took less than half as long as expected. Ive fired her up, and I now see why the previous owner got rid of her: To be honest this computer - as was delivered anyway - sucks. (Its an HP; which explains a lot: HP make awesome printers; I have one I bought new this year and swear by it, but their computers, on the other hand, leave a vast chasm between them and even the thought of desirability.) Can I, as a geek, make it rock? - Probably not - theres only so much you can do with crap - like make it smell better and camouflage it so no-one suspects it really is crap - But I can make it work well; in a comparative sense: I can and have started making it into what I need to use for creating music with. On that note the music computer - as I refer to it - is going to be broken up and used for spares. - Its ancient. (Im surprised it still works. - If it wasnt for my technical ability it would have been melted down and made into synthetic wood years ago.) Im going to build its replacement out of the new box, and use this laptop for business and internet work. I need to invest heavily in equipment for 2014: Whats currently in the studio is ok; but it needs more, a lot more. Right; time for me to shut up; before I write another book on Facebook. - Catch yall later.
