Back home from a combination work and very personal trip to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Was honored and saddened to attend the decommissioning ceremony for one of my previous commands, the USS MIAMI (SSN 755) unarguably one of the finest submarines to ever sail and hands-down the best ship I ever served aboard. It is hard to describe how difficult it was for me to attend; it was as if I had lost a member of the family, but it was great to see some Shipmates and tell stories into the wee hours of the morning. MIAMI is leaving service far too soon but she leaves a huge legacy. I still have news articles, pictures and even a copy of Time magazine that chronicled her in her heyday. A great ship with a with a very rare crew combination and I still remember the pride we all felt walking SUBASE New London wearing a MIAMI ball cap- we were THE crew to be on. My four years there are still the highlight of my career... Hooya MIAMI, we will remember you well... theday/article/20140328/NWS09/140329651/1017
