Back in 2002, the company where I worked as a developer was suffering a massive drop in sales due to the post 911 trauma. As a result the owner decided he needed to eliminate his fledgling online sales division, and I found myself on unemployment. After a few weeks of collecting unemployment and going to job interviews I got a letter from the unemployment office, directing me to report for a training course the following Monday. The course was to last a week. No other details other than the address and the time. So I dutifully went to the training course, along with twenty or so other classmates, all roughly the same age as me. In our orientation lecture, the instructor tells us that we were all statistically determined to be unemployable in our current professions, due to our age and lack of appropriate college degrees. We would be spending the next week being prepared to re-enter the workforce in a more appropriate position such as entry level food service or janitorial positions. He asked for questions. I got up and asked him what the penalty was for not attending the class. He smugly replied Well you can kiss next weeks check goodbye So I got up, collected my stuff and walked out. From the look on his face, this was not a usual occurrence. A few others followed me out. It was a struggle with the economy at that time but I did eventually find a job doing what I enjoyed, despite my age and lack of proper education. And 12 years later, Im still at it. Dont let anyone tell you you cant do what you love to do.
