Back in 2006 we were warned of impending disaster due to the Avian Bird Flu virus that supposedly had the ability to mutate and cause such widespread disease and death, that a national pandemic was declared by President Bush. This resulted in Congress passing legislation granting pharmaceutical companies immunity from any legal damages that would result in their rushing a vaccine to combat this terrible bird flu virus. The theory at the time was that outbreaks in Asia would come to America through migratory wild birds. Well, as it turned out, it never happened. That flu season was no worse than other flu seasons, and the wild birds carrying this virus, that we were told could wipe out humanity, never showed up. One of the other things that was discussed during this time, and which as actually proposed in the UK, was to eliminate outdoor poultry flocks. The British population, who loves their free-range chicken, was outraged, and it never happened. When the bird flu “pandemic” didn’t materialize in the U.S., calls for restrictions on outdoor pastured poultry also faded away. Well, the government threat to restricting or even eventually eliminating organic pastured chickens is back, as the Cornucopia Institute reports below. Not only is the idea that organic pastured poultry is more dangerous than confined factory birds ridiculous, but the practice of continuing to allow factory chickens to continue using the UDSA organic certification, without meeting the requirement of allowing the birds outdoor access, continues to this day. Cheap factory chickens and turkeys fed cheap government subsidized corn, soy, and wheat (much of which is genetically modified) is a big business in the U.S., so don’t expect the market of humanely raised poultry outdoors on pastures and organic non-GMO feed to increase without a fight from Big Ag and the government agencies that protect them.
